Appliance Gas vs. Electric Dryer Choices

Not all dryers are the same. There are two different power source options for dryers, well technically three. If you need to replace or upgrade your laundry dryer here are a few things you should know about your options.

Electric Dryers

Electric dryers use about 240 –volt current of power which is about twice the strength of standard household current. They use more voltage for fueling heated coils and use more heavy duty electrical outlets that can handle the breakers in a home’s electrical box. The installation of an electric outlet can cost more than just a standard outlet.

Electric dryers cost less in the purchase of the appliance. The great thing about electric dryers is that you do not need a gas line and there are options of not needing vents in some models. It does take a longer time to dry your clothes because it takes longer to heat up the appliance.

Gas Dryers

There are actually two different types of gas dryers, natural gas and liquid propane gas. If you choose to use a liquid propane gas power option, you will have to store the propane in a large gas tank on your home property. There are kits to convert natural gas to liquid propane.

The initial cost of gas dryers might be less, but in the long run it will cost less money to run your dryer over time. Because you need a gas line, there will be more cost with installation. The cost of electricity is about half of the amount as electric. In 2015, the U.S. Department of Energy started to give Energy Star ratings of appliances that use less energy than the standard amount. When looking to buy a new dryer you can find newer dryers that are Energy Star rated to help you save money on your energy bill and the environment.

Depending on what state you live in can help you determine what type of power source you should use for your dryer. In Colorado, about 90% of all home dryers are electric. In California, gas is more common. Texas homes are about 50% gas and 50% electric. It is best to contact your local appliance company to ask questions about what is the best option for your home.
