Changing Out the Water Filter in Your Refrigerator

What's the Purpose?

The main reason why you have a water filter is because you want to reduce the amount of chemicals in your drinking water. Depending on where you live, your water might naturally have more hard water. This means that there are more chemicals and substances in the water and that there is more of a chance for you and your family to get sick or have health problems. You want to use a filter to make sure that you and your family is drinking clean and healthy water.

When You Should Change it

Your refrigerator will automatically blink and indicating that your water needs to checked. This happens every 6 months, but doesn't necessarily mean that you need to change it. The main factor in deciding when you need to change out the water filter depends on how often you use your ice and water dispenser. If you use your refrigerator dispenser more frequently, you will probably want to change it every 6 months when the light goes off. If you rarely use your water dispenser and don't use very much ice, you can probably just replace it once a year or so. The main trick is that once your water starts to taste funny, replace your water filter.

Different Types

There are many different types of water filers, even just looking a refrigerator filters. The most common type of water filter has fiber paper inside that blocks the contaminant substances into the water the come out of the dispenser. The other main type of filter is called activated charcoal or reverse osmosis. The charcoal has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The charcoals absorb odors, and substances from gases and liquids. The two different ways to filter your water depends on the brand and model of your refrigerator. There is no way of changing which filter you can use. You have to make sure that you only get the kind that works with your specific model number or it will not fit and work right. Filters can also be placed on the refrigerator in different locations. Some are inside and in the back of the refrigerator. Others are located on the bottom and outside of the refrigerator. Check your manual to determine where and which filters are best for you.
